A box of toys for children who come to visit

When friends or relatives come to visit with their children, it helps to have something ready to hand. A box of toys for visiting children means that nobody has to hunt through the bedroom for something suitable. It also protects your own child's special things, which may not be meant for sharing.

The box should have a clear place, preferably somewhere the adults can reach, such as a shelf in the hall cupboard or on top of a wardrobe. Choose a sturdy box with a lid or a basket with a cloth over it. Fill it with things that work for different children: a few books, some building blocks, a puzzle, cars, paper and crayons. ## What goes in and what does not

The best toys for a guest box are simple and open: things that can be used in many ways and need no long explanation. A set of wooden blocks or a tin of buttons to sort keeps children busy for a long time. Toys with lots of small pieces need watching, so keep tiny items out of reach of the very youngest children who may visit.

Let your own child help choose what goes in the box. This makes it easier for them to accept that guests may play with these toys, and it stops arguments before they start. Some children like to add one or two things of their own, and this is a good sign that they feel proud of being hosts. Their real favourites stay in the bedroom, out of the way.

After the visit, the box is packed again. Check that nothing is broken and that all the pieces are back in their place. Wash anything that needs it, and put the box away until the next time. A short note inside the lid reminding you what is missing helps to keep it in good order.

Now and then, look at the box with fresh eyes. Swap items that no one uses for others, and take out things that have worn out. The box does not need to be big or complete. It only needs to be ready, so that when the doorbell rings, you can welcome the children in, knowing that something is waiting for them.
